Our involvement in the Symbio project

We’re excited to announce our participation in SYMBIO, an innovative three-year project funded by the European Union’s Horizon Europe research initiative. This collaborative initiative aims to empower European regional communities to develop bio-based business models built on circularity and industrial symbiosis principles.

SYMBIO equips participants with cutting-edge tools and methodologies. The project leverages big data and artificial intelligence to guide the design and implementation of strategies that increase bio-based products in the market. Additionally, SYMBIO provides a comprehensive framework for measuring the social, economic, and environmental impact of these strategies.

Led by the Lombardy Green Chemistry Association (Italy), SYMBIO boasts a €1.3 million budget and will be piloted in 12 diverse EU regions. These regions were strategically selected based on their bio-based resource potential.

PDR is actively contributing to SYMBIO's success. Dr Katie Beverley, our Senior Ecodesign Researcher, and Piotr Swiatek from our Design Policy team are playing key roles. Their expertise will be instrumental in mapping bio-based ecosystems within pilot regions, identifying drivers and barriers to adopting this approach, and exploring the societal impact of the project's interventions.

SYMBIO represents a powerful consortium. Eight partners from seven EU countries bring together the combined knowledge of universities, industry clusters, and private companies all working jointly to propel bio-based innovation in Europe. Stay tuned for further updates on PDR's involvement in this exciting project!
