Uncovering & Strengthening Hidden Innovation in Creative SMEs

Imagine unlocking hidden innovation within your everyday work. Our latest research reveals how design-thinking can transform Creative SMEs.

Naming Our “Invisible Work”: Uncovering and Strengthening Hidden Innovation in Creative SMEs Through Design-Thinking-Led R and D, authored by Dr Sally Cloke and co-authored by Prof. Andrew Walters and Jo Ward, showcases how through the Clwstwr programme we supported creative businesses. By helping them to adopt a design-led approach, these companies were able to innovate in ways that truly met their needs.

The paper delves into the experiences of projects funded by Clwstwr, examining their perspectives on R&D before and after engaging with PDR and Clwstwr.

INSIGHTS FROM THE LEAD AUTHOR

Dr Sally Cloke, shared her thoughts on the research:

"One of the most interesting findings from our research was that using a design thinking-led approach to R&D can do more than enable creative practitioners to be more innovative, it can change their self-understanding. Many study participants learned to value the “hidden” R&D that they were already engaging in as part of their everyday work. They discovered approaches to R&D that worked for them, and they gained the vocabulary and confidence to present their R&D achievements to prospective funding bodies and collaborators."
