PDR wins Gold in IDEA 2023 for Tabu
We're thrilled to announce that we've won Gold at the International Design Excellence Awards (IDEA) 2023. Congratulations to the whole team!
About IDEA
The International Design Excellence Awards, organised by the Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA), is in its 43rd year and is renowned as one of the most esteemed design awards programmes. We take great pride in our association with this prestigious event, which has already seen our Director Jarred Evans speaking yesterday on the realities of net zero design and the steps PDR take to implement sustainable principles.
Initially created to recognise exceptional achievements in industrial design, the programme has evolved to encompass innovation in various related fields such as design strategy, branding, digital interface, and more. As a result, IDEA has set the standard for what a design award represents. Its influence has grown to become a pivotal factor in shaping careers, making IDEA one of the largest and eagerly anticipated annual awards programmes globally.
About Tabu*
Tabu* is a menstrual support initiative designed to empower premenstrual users and help them prepare for their first period. Its primary goals are to destigmatise periods, provide positive experiences, and tackle period poverty by ensuring access to menstrual products and education.
Designed with Generation Alpha in mind, Tabu* offers a customisable carry case with a day's supply of pads or tampons that utilises bold and interactive packaging for individual expression. It also includes a QR code linking to the Tabu* app, which provides dependable and inclusive resources to educate and inform young people from ages seven to seventeen.
Through open conversations and shared experiences, Tabu* creates a safe space for discussion, aiming to remove the loneliness, isolation, and embarrassment often associated with menstruation.
Tabu* has been awarded Gold in the Concepts & Speculative Design category.
Our thoughts on the awards
PDR’s Colour Materials and Finish Designer, Katie Forrest Smith, said: “We are beyond thrilled to receive this prestigious gold award for Tabu*, a project we feel so passionate about. The recognition IDEA has provided this project underscores the importance of working towards dismantling the societal stigmas that still surround menstruation.”
