V-Trak

V-Trak's transformative journey through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership.

V-Trak, a leading designer and manufacturer of innovative seating and positioning equipment for wheelchair users, faced the challenge of expanding into new markets while enhancing their existing product offerings. With a bold vision to double their revenue within five years, V-Trak needed to develop new design and manufacturing capabilities to meet the evolving needs of their customers.

UNDERSTANDING USER NEEDS

Driven by the principle of Productive Empathy, V-Trak is committed to understanding and meeting the needs of wheelchair users. They faced the challenge of innovating across multiple dimensions:

  • Entering new paediatric and active user markets.
  • Developing high-performance, aesthetically advanced products.
  • Transitioning to a new sales model.
  • Ensuring international regulatory compliance.
  • Integrating advanced manufacturing techniques like 3D printing.

CRAFTING A USER-CENTRED DESIGN STRATEGY

To tackle these challenges, V-Trak partnered with us through a Knowledge Transfer Partnership (KTP). Together, we developed a comprehensive strategy aimed at:

  1. Integrating a Bespoke User-Centred Design Strategy: By collaborating with us, V-Trak developed and integrated a user-centred and service design strategy into their product development process.
  2. Embedding Mass Customisation Methods: Our partnership helped V-Trak adopt additive manufacturing and advanced production methods, enabling them to offer highly customised products with reduced waste.
  3. Creating a Platform of Quality Management and Medical Regulatory Knowledge: Innovations developed during the KTP were embedded into a robust quality management system, ensuring compliance with international medical regulations.

CHALLENGES & OPPORTUNITIES

The journey was not without its hurdles. Just as the KTP was starting, V-Trak was acquired by Permobil, a global leader in advanced medical technology. The KTP played a crucial role in aligning V-Trak with Permobil's strategic goals and operational standards, ensuring a smooth integration.

Additionally, the Enhanced Knowledge Transfer Partnership (eKTP), funded by the Welsh Government, enabled V-Trak to gain a greater understanding of international best practices. Attendance at the Rapid Tech TCT conference in Los Angeles, where KTP Associate Will and PDR Academic Lead, Dominic also met with the Permobil USA design team provided invaluable insights into the latest advancements in 3D printing and manufacturing techniques. Collaboration with Supportec, another Permobil company, based in the Netherlands has also helped to enhance long-term research and development opportunities.

The KTP also influenced V-Trak’s approach to product testing and compliance with ISO standards. It enabled the development of a custom mechanical test rig that makes sure all products meet high-quality benchmarks and regulatory requirements, enhancing their reputation for reliability and excellence.

IMPACT & RESULTS

The KTP has been instrumental in transforming V-Trak's business model. By integrating user-centred design strategies and mass customisation methods, V-Trak has developed products that are high-performing, lightweight, and aesthetically advanced. Their robust quality management system ensures compliance with international regulatory standards, enhancing their ability to enter new global markets. These achievements have been recognised with a prestigious iF Design Award.

Moreover, the continuity provided by the Associate, Will, who has stayed on with V-Trak, has ensured that the knowledge and skills developed during the KTP are kept within the company, further driving innovation and growth. "The Knowledge Transfer Partnership has been a transformative experience, allowing us to push the boundaries of innovation and design," says Will.
